My name is Raina. I am 14 years old and live in Gold Beach, Oregon. I have always had a fascination of deer and animals. My fascination started when I was little. I went to my grandmas every spring, summer, fall, and winter. In the winter time we fed the deer, and in the summer we watched the does feed their fawns. My favorite time of year was the fall when the rut was happening. My first encounter was a large buck chasing a doe around a juniper tree several times. I never saw that same buck again but I'll never forget seeing him. the second encounter was a doe in the winter time. She was a fairly small doe, probably 2 years old, who had a large growth on her neck. We fed the birds on our deck and she'd come up and eat the bird seed three feet away from our french doors. She didn't ever run off when we would go look at her. she would look at us and that's when my interest started, but It wasn't till I was 6 or 7 .
I started off in Cottage Grove, Oregon. I never really liked my biological mom, Erica. I always favored my dad, Wade. Dad and Erica always go into fights because my Erica cheated on my dad and was always drinking. That lead to my mom wanting to take me away from my dad. We moved around a lot so I never had a lot of friends. My dad took me hunting when I was still a baby. He has pictures of me dressed in my camo. I have always been into the outdoors. Then my dad met Keeta, my mom. I love her more than anyone else. She had never had kids when my dad met her, so she was winging it. You could tell she was a natural because we immediately liked her. She was been the greatest addition to our family. I Love hunting and fishing more than anything. For my 13th birthday present, my grandma took me elk hunting. My birthday is right in the middle of elk season. I like deer hunting too, but I like the high country that elk live in. This year, on my 14th birthday, I went with dad instead. It was a lot of fun. We had only been out of the pick-up for 15 minutes when I said 'Dad, I see elk!' The fog had been horrible that day so they looked like tan stumps. They were 1000 yards across a draw, that's when I got excited. He radioed into Jim and told him where the elk were. We started to walk down the draw to go stalk the large bull we had saw in the bunch. That's when John said, 'Wade sit still there is a big 6 or 7 pointer headed in your direction.' So we sat for maybe 10 to 15 minutes. The bull never came. A couple does came running down the hill so we figured that the bull weaved up the hill to get into the thick timber. We walked up the hill and didn't see elk for the rest of the day.
On my first hunting trip for Mule Deer, my dad shot a forked horn on opening morning. We didn't hear the shot or him hollering for quite some time and I started to get worried. Then we heard a faint holler. We immediately started panicking. Then we heard 'COME HELP WITH THE DEER!!!' I was so relieved. I was so excited when it hit me. He killed a deer! I started to run as fast as I could when grandma said that there were rattlers that I needed to look out for. Dad said that he had never seen someone run up a hill so fast.
I shad always loved hunting but I never really cared for sports. I played volleyball for a year and didn't really like it. Then basketball came and I've never been into another sport nearly as much. I moved over to Bend, Oregon when i was 10 and then stayed there till I was 12. I liked Bend a lot. It had been the longest I had stayed in one place. When my parents told me that we were moving, I kinda went into a state of depression. I had actually made good friends there. Dad told me that we were moving to one of the best salmon fishing rivers ion Oregon, I got excited. We then moved way down the coast to little old Gold Beach. It didn't look interesting at first until I saw the house. I fell in love with the country and elk that lived there. I have lives in Gold Beach ever since and have made really good friends. I have had an awesome basketball career in Gold Beach. I am only 14 and I am good enough to make varsity. Basketball is my favorite and it won't change...
